“Together We Heal”, Part 1 of the two-part mural we unveiled last week for the @nychealthsystem and the Laurie Tisch Illumination Fund’s Arts in Medicine program at South Brooklyn Health (fka Coney Island Hospital).
I collaborated with the staff and medical professionals at SBH to come with this design that pays homage to South Brooklyn’s rich culture and history and the hospital’s commitment to care and community. The mural pays homage to the original inhabitants of the area: the Lenape people and the rabbit colony that gave Coney Island it’s name, as well as SBH’s beginnings as a first aid stand on the beach, and the soon to be demolished Hammett Pavilion. Looking to the future, a pair of healing hands help an elderly patient down to the newly constructed RGB building, where a doctor holds the umbrella for her patient - a symbol of the storms that SBH and the South Brooklyn community have weathered together, literally and figuratively.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with this caring and fun group of doctors, nurses and hospital staff to create this design and hopefully bring some comfort, pride and inspiration to the hospital’s patients. Thank you to the Laurie Tisch foundation and to H+H for making this beautiful and important initiative possible, and to Monica and Arta specifically for being the boots on the ground and helping this process flow so smoothly!
